Joint Design 3
The bolts in a tension joint must act like clamps. The assembling and tightening of the bolt and nut produces a tensile prestress in the fastener, which is approximately equal to the compressive stress
introduced in the joint material. The behavior and life of the joint depends on how tightly the bolts clamp the joint and how long they can maintain their preload.
