Torque is used to determine roughly the amount of preload developed in a fastener during the snugging operation. The turn on the nut method is a more reliable measure of the further increase of tension of a previously “snugged” bolt. Experiments must first be done on a sample joint to determine the effect of turn
on the joint and the fastener.
